One of the most impressive sets of waterfalls in the tropical Southeast Asian region — and in the entire world — is the Kuan Si Waterfalls (Kouangxi) near Luang Prabang in the Country of Laos. A three-tiered set of falls, the cascades include high falls, shallow pools and ledge falls set in an aquatic playground in the middle of the Laos jungle.
The falls are located just 18 miles south of Luang Prabang, and is the region’s top destination for travelers passing through the area. While the falls themselves are located in deep jungle — seemingly in the middle of the wild — Luang Prabang is a relatively modern city with all of the conveniences you could ask for, and is close enough to make traveling to the falls a small day-trip.
Getting to Kuang Si Falls
Getting to Kuang Si falls is relatively easy — considering its location within thick jungle. Visitors to the falls can travel to the falls using a boat or a songthaeaw (bus), and have a “Tuk Tuk” or guide lead the way. The locals charge a small fee for entry to the falls (usually about $5-15), which is well worth the cost, and the cost of the entry goes to maintaining the bridges and pathways near the falls.
The Rescued Black Bears of Kuang Si Falls
When visiting Kuang Si Falls, you not only get to gaze at the natural beauty of the falls, but you can also see the rescued black bears at the park. These bears — kept safely behind viewing barricades — were rescued from poachers and given a second chance at life in this jungle sanctuary.
Lodging Near the Kuang Si Waterfalls.
