A beautiful and lush country on the Black Sea in Eastern Europe, Romania is a place of lore and a long history; with all of the tales of vampires and bloodlust that are often associated with Romania, it can often be difficult to realize just how beautiful a land Romania truly is. Just one look at the waterfalls and lush green forests around the Cheile Nerei-Beusnita National Park in Romania, will quickly remind you of what a magical and enchanted place it is.

Romania -- Map

Cheile Nerei-Beusnita National Park means the gorges of Cheile Nerei-Beusnita National Park, as the park is a made up of a series of thin and deep ravines in the rock that has been cut from thousands of years of erosion from the Nera River and the Beu River and their tributaries. The rivers flow through a heavily forested area in the Southwestern corner of Romania, hidden in the steep terrain of the mountains and covered by the high canopy of the forest. While not a true tropical region, the lushness of the forest and the many exotic species of fauna in the area is reminiscent of the jungles of Central America.

Izvorul Bigăr — Bigar Waterfall

Certainly the most famous formation in the park and in all of Romania, the Bigar waterfall does not fall like many waterfalls found throughout the world; instead it has a moderate trickle of rocks that are heavily caked with lichen and moss, creating a fine and misty cascade as it falls off the green dress of plant material and into the river.

There are many hiking trails that follow along the rivers in the park, highlighting the dozens of waterfalls, crevasses and canyons that make up this otherworldly destination. The area is also a large draw to those interested in rock climbing, cliff repelling, and cave exploring and spelunking. While the land has officially been protected since the year 2000, it is now more accessible than ever to those who wish to see the park’s beauty first hand, and the conservation efforts have lead to greater numbers in the flora and fauna that call the park their home.

  1. I love these photos. I work the graveyard shift, and drive by many roadside waterfalls along the highway. Even in the dark, somehow waterfalls catch the light- it is like they glow in the dark! My favorite nature feature.
