Founded way back in the year 1370 A.D., the town of Karlovy Vary is one of the world’s oldest “Spa Towns,” meaning that the entire existence of the town is owed to it being built over natural hot springs that are located in the region. The town’s namesake is none other than Charles IV Holy Roman Emperor and the Czech King. Charles IV spoke loudly to all he met about the healing powers of the hot springs in the area.

This notion of using hot springs to cure medical maladies and illnesses was a popular one at the time, with more and more people claiming that they had been healed by these hot springs and others around the world. Over the subsequent years and centuries, the town grew into one of the first “resort destinations” and first “wellness centers” in modern history. Today, the tradition continues today, with the tens of thousand of tourists and travelers that still flock to the Spa Town of Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic every year.
